Buyer Evaluations

I use this in my basement close to my 15 year old water heater. Had it about 1 month when I woke up to hear beeping coming from the basement. I rushed down only to obtain the unit sitting on a dry floor. Maybe the humidity in the basement brought on it though I do have a dehumidifier running. I reset the unit and it has been operating ok since. On the plus side, the unit was loud enough for me to hear on the most important floor of my property so I am happy about that.
UPDATE - 12/9/2009 - soon after two even more false alarms in the past couple of weeks I am about prepared to give up on this unit. It is definitely additional of a nuisance than it is a help. It does have a outstanding alarm even though that can be heard well all through my residence, but I'm obtaining tired of rushing down the basement only to obtain it sitting there screeching away to a dry floor.

My law workplace has a gas water heater and this alarm is placed on the floor about 9 inches from the base of the water heater to detect any leaks that could create. Runs on 1 9 volt battery. Has two metal rods running along the outside of the case and when water touches the metal rods, considering that water conducts electricity, the alarm goes off. Wish it were louder alarm, but it is the loudest I have located of these kinds of alarms and it is loud enough for us to hear it if it goes off. If you intend to use this kind of alarm in a remote location not ordinarily occupied, such as a basement or garage, I would advocate you not get this unit and as an alternative get one of the even more expensive units that alarms to a sensor in a less remote area of your home, with a substantially louder alarm. Bear in mind any alarm is worthless if it alarms but can not be heard. But this alarm is fine for us as the water heater for my workplace is in a closet off the major hall which is traveled really often. Fairly pleased with it. And by the way, we tested it by just placing it under a bathroom faucet and operating some water on it.
