Buyer Evaluations
This tool is a standard tongue and groove pair of pliers that come with rubber caps that cover the jaws in order to not mar decorative components.
This tool will perform on "nuts" (decorative chrome caps etc) from 1/four" to about 2 inches in diameter. The jaw will open wider than two inches - but two inches is about the max width for a good solid grip (could possibly operate on a 2.five" nut). With the rubber caps removed, it can do double duty as normal tongue and groove pliers.
It comes with an added pair of rubber caps so when the 1st pair get cut-up or ripped, they can be replaced. The rubber caps do not come installed, and they are a bit complicated to get on. (Push the caps on by holding the pliers firmly and pressing the pliers into the rubber tip although the tip is braced against a solid object). I have not tried, but they are quite possibly incredibly difficult to eliminate. The spare set of rubber caps can be slipped over the rear finish of the handles for storage, but they come off of the handles fairly very easily.
The pliers really feel solid and powerful. The handles are created of about five/32" thick steel even though the jaws are over three/8" thick. The tool is ten 1/8" extended and up to 2 5/8" wide at the handles (when closed). The jaw region (with the rubber caps in spot) is about 1.five" OD when totally closed.
The rubber caps are about three/32" thick - I am not convinced they will often protect decorative chrome from the rather sharp deep ridges in the metal jaws, but they did just fine the one time I implemented them.
I bought these pliers (Common Tool 159) along with the "SUPERIOR TOOL 06012 PLIERS PLUMBING" pliers. Seattle Plumbing The "06012" pliers failed to loosen the decorative chrome cap (it just slid about) even though these General Tool 159 pliers readily did the job. These pliers did the job properly where two other people had failed (each a pair of strap pliers and the 06012 failed to loosen the cap).
FYI, When I bought these, I did not see the "BWT Inc. Plier, Soft Touch, No Mar, 1 1/two Jaw Opening" pliers, which appear intriguing. In spite of this, these did the job properly so I am pleased.
I recommend this item.
one more review:
I purchased this for the soft jaws which I installed on my professional Solder Seal pliers. These pliers look like "China's worst"... the sort you acquire for $two at a flea market. They are not skilled grade.
